Georgia Uncovered

A walking journey through history, architecture and hidden stories

Tbilisi is not a city you simply visit. It is a city you read — street by street, courtyard by courtyard, layer by layer. On this walking tour, you will discover the Georgian capital as a living chronicle of history. In just a few hours, you will move through centuries of architecture, culture and urban life: from medieval churches and defensive walls to Persian bathhouses, 19th-century mansions, Soviet modernism and bold contemporary design. You will walk through the winding streets of the Old Town, see the places where East and West have met for centuries, and hear the stories of poets, merchants, artists, aristocrats and revolutionaries who shaped the city. You will also discover the atmosphere of Tbilisi’s Silver Age — when the city became a cosmopolitan meeting point of cafés, salons, literature and avant-garde art. This is not just a city walk. It is a journey through time — and one of the best ways to understand Georgia.

Why join this tour?

Tbilisi is beautiful, but without context it can be difficult to read. Its charm lies
not only in balconies, churches and narrow streets, but in the layers hidden
behind them. This tour helps you understand how the city was shaped by Georgian kings, Persian influence, Russian imperial rule, European ideas, Soviet architecture and modern Georgian creativity. You will see famous landmarks, but also learn how to look at Tbilisi differently:
as a city of contrasts, memory, survival and constant reinvention.

Tour itinerary

10:00 — Meeting at Europe Square

Meet your guide at Europe Square and begin the walking tour through the historical heart of Tbilisi. This is the perfect starting point to understand the city’s geography: the river, the cliffs, the old trade routes, the fortress above the city and the districts that grew around them.

Old tibilisi

Walk into the narrow streets of the Old Town, where wooden balconies, brick houses, courtyards and churches create one of the most atmospheric urban
landscapes in the Caucasus. You will learn how Tbilisi developed as a multicultural city, where Georgian, Armenian, Persian, Jewish, Russian and European influences existed side by side.

Abanotubani — the Sulphur Bath District

Visit one of the most iconic parts of Tbilisi: the sulphur bath district, with its domed bathhouses and Persian-style architecture.
This is where the legend of Tbilisi begins — with warm sulphur springs, royal hunting stories and the birth of the city itself.

Narikala Fortress viewpoint

Walk towards one of the most important historical viewpoints of the city. From here, you will see how Tbilisi was built between mountains, river and trade
routes — and why this location made the city both powerful and vulnerable for centuries.

Metekhi and the cliff above the Mtkvari River

Discover one of the most symbolic places in Tbilisi. The Metekhi area tells the story of royal power, religious tradition, imprisonment, destruction and survival.
From the cliff, you will see one of the most classic panoramas of the city: the Old Town, the river, the fortress and the bath district.

The Bridge of Peace and modern Tbilisi

Continue towards one of the most recognisable contemporary landmarks of the city. Here, the tour moves from old Tbilisi into the modern urban vision of the 21st
century. You will see how tradition and bold new architecture meet — sometimes beautifully, sometimes controversially.

Freedom Square and Rustaveli Avenue

Walk towards the city’s symbolic centre and one of the most important avenuesin the country. Rustaveli Avenue is where Tbilisi becomes imperial, intellectual, theatrical and political. Here you will hear stories of writers, artists, demonstrations, theatres, museums and the public life of modern Georgia.

19th-century Tbilisi and the Silver Age

Discover the more elegant, cosmopolitan face of the city: old mansions, urban salons, literary cafés and the atmosphere of Tbilisi at the turn of the 19th and
20th centuries. This was the city of poets, artists, intellectuals and cultural experiments — a place where Georgian tradition met European influence and avant-garde energy

Soviet and post-Soviet layers

Tbilisi is also a city shaped by the Soviet period and the dramatic decades that followed. You will see how Soviet modernism, political memory and contemporary
reconstruction became part of the city’s identity — sometimes hidden in plain sight.

14:30 — End of the tour

Visit the monastery of St. Nino, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Georgia. The monastery is beautifully located above the Alazani Valley and
offers wide panoramic views over Kakheti.
