Georgia Uncovered

8 days | Svaneti and Georgia’s most dramatic mountain landscapes

This journey takes you to Svaneti — one of the most remarkable and distinctive regions of Georgia. Hidden high in the Caucasus Mountains, it is a land of
medieval stone towers, remote villages, ancient traditions and some of the country’s most spectacular scenery. The route connects western Georgia with the mountainous north, combining the essential highlights of Svaneti with places that feel more remote and less accessible. It is designed for travellers who want to go beyond the classic Georgia route and experience the country’s wilder, more dramatic side — in a comfortable and well-organised format.

Why choose this program

● experience one of Georgia’s most distinctive mountain regions
● see the dramatic landscapes of the Greater Caucasus
● visit Svaneti’s historic villages, including UNESCO-listed Ushguli
● discover medieval stone towers, local traditions and mountain culture
● combine nature, history and authentic regional atmosphere in one journey

How the journey is structured

This is an 8-day touring program of moderate intensity, designed for travellers who want to experience the mountains without turning the journey into a demanding expedition. The days are varied and carefully paced, combining scenic drives, village visits, cultural stops, time in nature and short walks or light trekking where appropriate. The route allows travellers to experience Svaneti’s landscapes and traditions at a comfortable rhythm, with enough time to enjoy the atmosphere of the region. Accommodation is arranged in carefully selected properties, including smaller local stays in Svaneti. These are chosen not only for comfort, but also for their connection to the place, giving the journey a more personal and authentic character.
Transport is provided by private vehicles suited to mountain roads, making the program more flexible and comfortable than standard coach-based travel.

Day 1
Kutaisi, Tskaltubo and the First Glimpse of Western Georgia

Arrival in Kutaisi and the beginning of the journey. The program starts with a gentle introduction to western Georgia, including visits to Bagrati Cathedral and Motsameta Monastery, both set in beautiful historical surroundings. There is also time for a local market experience before continuing to Tskaltubo — a former Soviet spa town known for its faded sanatoriums, grand architecture and unique atmosphere. This first day is slower-paced, allowing travellers to settle in and begin discovering Georgia without unnecessary rush.

Day 2
Martvili Canyon, Local Flavours and the Road to Zugdidi

The day begins with one of western Georgia’s most scenic natural sites —
Martvili Canyon. The visit includes a walk and, weather permitting, a short boat experience through the canyon’s striking limestone formations and turquoise water. The route continues through the landscapes of Samegrelo, with time for a local meal, wine tasting and selected scenic stops along the way. Where possible, part of the day may include access to less visited areas by off-road vehicles, adding a more adventurous but still comfortable element to the journey. Transfer to Zugdidi for the evening.

Day 3
Dadiani Palace, Enguri Dam and Arrival in Mestia

A day that connects history, engineering and the gradual transition into the high mountains. The program begins with a visit to the Dadiani Palace in Zugdidi, connected with one of Georgia’s most important noble families.
The journey then continues towards the Enguri Dam — one of the most
impressive structures in the region. Depending on availability and local
conditions, the visit may include access inside the dam structure, offering a
rare perspective on this monumental site. From here, the road leads deeper into the mountains. Arrival in Mestia, the maintown of Svaneti, surrounded by stone towers and the peaks of the Greater Caucasus.

Day 4
Mestia and Svan culture

A full day dedicated to Mestia and the culture of Svaneti. The program includes the regional museum, traditional defensive towers and examples of Svan houses, offering a closer look at the architecture, history and identity of this remarkable mountain region. The day also includes a cable car ride into the mountains, with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. This is a day that combines landscape with cultural context — an introduction to Svaneti not only as a beautiful destination, but as
a region with its own strong traditions and character.

Day 5
Ushguli and high mountains

Off-road transfer to Ushguli, one of the highest permanently inhabited villages in Europe and one of the most iconic places in Svaneti. The route itself is part of the experience, passing through mountain valleys, remote villages and dramatic Caucasus scenery. After arrival, time to explore Ushguli and its surroundings. The program may include a walk towards the glacier area, depending on weather and group conditions. The day ends with dinner in a local home, offering a more personal encounter with Svan hospitality and mountain life.

Day 6
Morning in Ushguli and Return to Mestia

Morning in the high mountains, with time to experience Ushguli at a quieter
pace. A short walk or light trek in the area allows travellers to enjoy the
landscape without turning the day into a demanding expedition.
Later, return to Mestia with stops in traditional Svan villages along the way. This day gives more space to absorb the atmosphere of Svaneti — its towers, mountain roads, isolated settlements and powerful sense of place.

Day 7
Return through Western Georgia — Chiatura, Katskhi and Prometheus Cave

A long but fascinating transition day back through western Georgia. The route may include selected stops such as Chiatura, a former mining town known for its Soviet-era industrial landscape and cable car history, as well as the striking Katskhi Pillar — one of the most unusual sites in the country.
Depending on timing and local conditions, the program may also include
Prometheus Cave, one of Georgia’s best-known natural attractions. The day is designed as a final contrast to the high mountains of Svaneti, showing another side of western Georgia before the journey comes to an end.
Farewell dinner in the evening.
